In April of 1952 ground was broken for the Towner County Memorial Hospital on land donated by Phil and Julianne Belzer. This state of the art hospital was administered by the Sisters of St. Francis. A quote from a local newspaper stated "The communities new 20 bed hospital has been declared by state and federal inspectors to be among the most modernly built and finest equipped in the Upper Midwest." The hospital continued under the administration of the Sisters of St. Francis until the early 1990s when the rising cost of healthcare required the Sisters of St. Francis to either sell or close the facility. In July of 1992 the ownership and direction of Towner County Memorial Hospital was changed when the citizens of Towner County pulled together to insure the people of this area would have access to health care well into the future. In 1995 ground was again broken for a new medical clinic, dental clinic, emergency room, and facility creating a medical center that met and exceeded all the standards in the healthcare industry.
In the years since Towner County Medical Center has continued to grow to meet the healthcare needs of the area. Today Towner County Medical Center consists of a rural health clinic in Cando, a medical clinic in Devils Lake, and a critical access hospital with a level V trauma center in Cando. TCMC also includes senior independent living housing, basic care residential service and skilled nursing residentail service in Cando. A dental practice is located in our medical center in Cando. Towner County Medical Center also has a child day care center. All facilities meet and exceed today's standards in the healthcare industry.
Towner County Medical Center continually strives to provide the highest level of healthcare needed by the citizens of the area. We work to provide core medical services directly through our practitioners while specialty care is provided by outreach practitioners we contract with.
